Still want to know about the origins of those ascii cats? All can now be revealed. My last post generated a huge response (at least in my head), and I’ve had plenty of interesting feedback (notably from Demi, thank you very much). After collating all the evidence, it would appear that the story goes something like this:

The 2 Channel community is an unqualified Internet success story. Started in 1999 by Tokyo based Hiroyuki Nishimura, the site now generates around 1,000,000 posts every day, a vast amount for any site, let alone an independently run one. It’s also unusual in that users are able to post anonymously, meaning that people are able to contribute without fear of retribution. This anonymity leads not only to a highly animated level of discussion, but also the occasional flame war. One of the most popular attacks is the phrase, “Chubo ha kaere! (You’re a lamer, get out!)”, which is more often than not greeted by the retort, “Omae mona (You too).” Legend has it that one user (no-one is sure who was the first) drew an ascii character with a speech bubble uttering the latter phrase in response to just such a flame, and the character Mona was born.

Since then the Mona has become a Japanese Internet staple, still used regularly on message boards such as 2 Channel and other underground forums, as well as starring in a quite bewildering array of flash animations. Other similar characters have developed alongside Mona.

If you search hard enough you’ll find an array of Mona-related merchandise - everything from mouse mats to mugs and all kinds of trinkets.
