32 silces of insanity

I just new it would happen. It’s happened before. I find a strange Japanese animation and I’m immediately probing google to find more. It’s an addiction, but at least once I’ve had my fill I don’t seem to need another fix for a few months. This little lot took just less than an hour to track down, so there’s probably thousands more out there just waiting to be discovered. And yes, that ascii cat makes several more appearances - I wish someone would explain to me just who he is.

Just click on a flag to link to each animation. Warning: the last one isn’t work safe.

I don’t even know what to say about the last one…

Brilliant. Have you heard Fakevox by Plus-tech Squeeze Box? Also from the Land of the Rising Sun, they’re doing the musical equivalent of these animations. Try “Early Riser”. You’ll see what I mean.

Yes, I’m familiar with the work of the mighty Squeeze Box. In J-Pop terms I’d put them somewhere between Cornelius and Pizzicato 5, although that’s probably a lazy comparison. Excellent stuff all the same.

A geat collection of the wonderful combination that is flash+japanese+insanity, but you missed sazae my own personal favourite.

I’d already linked to that one on b3ta’s weblog, so I didn’t bother with it here - it’s a nice one, though - a parady of Sazae-san, the longest running animated television series in history.

The odds are that wherever I found picked it up from b3ta so apologies and thanks for such a great link. I did wonder what it refered to so that’s one mystery solved.

I’ve noticed that when the cat appears, the lettering sometimes says ‘piko’ or something. Are we sure he’s not Pikachu?

I don’t think so. I’ve been busy compiling evidence and will tell all very shortly.

the two main ascii cats appeared in many Japanese flash movies are named ‘Monar Cat’ and ‘Giko Cat’.
these cats and other characters are created and grown by Japanese bloggers, or anonymous cowords in rather underground forums like amezo, ayashii world, and 2channel(http://2ch.net) .

The lettering says ‘Giko’.
Its name is Giko(Giko neko(Giko Cat)).

Hallo! My HN is xiang.
I’m Japanese.

I enjoyed your home page very much!
I think Japanese flash animations are strange and interesting, too.
So,I introduce my favorite one!

http://www9.plala.or.jp/t-ranet/kako/flash/tetorisu.swf

“うわぁぁぁぁぁ!!” probably means “Oh,noooooo!!!!” .

And,I heard you woud like to know about Omaemona.
I think Omaemona means “You,too!” .
Mona of Omaemona is a character’s name on 2ch,so Omaemona is a kind of Mona’s pattern.
When a writer write critical opinion to somebody on BBS, 2channeler use Omaemona to make a fool of him.

By the way,”Oremona” is similar pattern to Omaemona, it means “Me,too!”.
When you write critical opinion to somebody on BBS, be sure to use Oremona in self-criticism!
For example,” You must think about environmental problem! …..Oremona-!”

Then,Domo Arigato!
I’m really sorry for my poor English… ;;

Thanks Xiang - I’ve got lots of information now, and will be writing some more about these characters.

Very interesting post - loved it in fact
Cheers
