ground zero yard sale
The Ground Zero Theme Park page has been doing the rounds over the last couple of days. It’s the sort of thing that a lot of people are going to find abhorrent, especially with the anniversary of 9/11 approaching rapidly, but the site’s creator does have a disclaimer. Here he claims that the page is meant as an satirical comment on the cottage industry that has sprung up selling Ground Zero souvenirs, making money from other people’s misfortune.
I’m not completely convinced - he could be genuine, or he might have written the passage to deflect criticism from what many will assume is a deliberately offensive project.
Either way, he does have a point. A quick search for Ground Zero or Twin Towers at eBay reveals a steadily growing list of items for sale ‘commemorating’ the events. I just wish I’d spotted this auction before it vanished from the shelves.
While we’re on the subject of 9/11, this BBC animated timeline explaining the events is quite brilliant. It’s aimed at kids, so obviously the vast loss of life takes a back seat, and the principal benefit from the Allied presence in Afghanistan seems to be that people can watch TV again, but it’s still extremely well done.
