i had 'mock duck' in a chinese in NY a while back. It looked just like a plate of sliced skin. It tasted alright, i guess, but i thought, blimey, if you're a veggie why go for something that tastes not much like the real thing but looks so much more gruesome? It was really weird.

Feck, I've become one of those preachy vegetarians I always loathe. Sorry.

I love my food so sometimes get carried away. I hope the above doesn't read too much like a diatribe ;)

If you want any of the recipes above, let me know...

I'm with Amardeep and Jennifer. Much better stuff out there than faux-meat crap.

Try Nadine Abensur's moussaka (Crank's Bible). Or gado gado (World Food Cafe I). Or a Thai curry from Leith's Vegetarian Bible.

If you've got time, go for something from Dennis Cotter's Paradiso Seasons or The Gate Vegetarian Cookbook. If you haven't got time, go for something from The Gate *Easy* Vegetarian Cookbook (see what they've done there?).

Or just make up some falafel and hummus, roast veg lasagne, spanakopita or leek and goat's cheese pithivier.

I'm impressed. I would not have made it 48 hours. There are better things that fake meat though.

The thing i don't understand about products like these is that i don't understand the concept of being a vegetarian and then eating food that's supposed to be like meat.

And Fraser i am frankly disappointed that you aren't testing out your culinary skills in making proper vegetarian food like most vegetarians rather than reheating food that is a mockery of it's meaty counterpart.
