I didn't follow your 2nd advice and I was just in Times Square and NYE midnight and u know what? It was great! It was not hell at all, on the contrary, specially for me that I don't like NYE celebrations and I'm slightly scared by mad crowd. All very pleasant, no mess, quite an amazing place to be...
